So I saw The Wrestler for the second time last night and jeez....that movie just takes the wind out of me.Seeing that movie made me remember why I tend to only see action movies and comedies in theaters, because that movie just left me miserable. Not in a ,that was a ripoff sense but in an emotionally crippled by the movie sense. My friend Stephanie was crying throughout the entire thing and my friend Brendan even shed a few and even though I felt it...I could no cry.
I can't cry at movies, and believe me I've tried. Me and my friends have tried to cry at a lot of movies and have succeeded. One cries during most football movies and another cried to the Tony Jaa movie the Protector, but me...I've only come like...watery eyes close twice.
The movies that I almost cried at were Cool Runnings and Sesame Street: Follow that Bird
This wasn't like...10 years ago this happened, it was months ago.
I can't really fathom why, but both of the endings to that movie made me just get watery eyes. I think I attirbuted the Sesame Street one to memories of my childhood, but Cool Runnings I guess was just too damn inspirational.
I'm a weirdo

I have cried during movies and got damn close when i watched the Ram climb the ropes at the end. His relationship with hi daughter is never settled him and the dancer never truly say that "I love you" moment and we don't know if he beat the Ayatollah(brilliantly played by Ernest the Cat Miller!). It was this like of finality that made me think of people like Owen Hart, Eddie Guererro, and Curt Henning and how their amazing careers did not have that last moment in the sun.
ReplyDeleteI actually thought this was a movie about Owen Hart at first, but was quickly hit emotionally from this great movie. I think how well done this movie is made adds to that sense as well. Also, in Cool Runnings when they carry the sled across the finish line it gets you everytime aha.
ReplyDeleteI don't think its bad or good to cry at movies. You should just do what feels natural. I will echo your sentiments that the Wrestler is an extremely sad movie at points. I rememeber seeing Titanic and thinking that was a very sad movie too. Both of these movies certainly dug at one's heartstrings. I would say that a movie that evokes a physical reaction (laughter, crying) then the movie certainly has something to it, because doing this is no easy feat.
ReplyDeleteI've always found it hard to cry in movies. Even though some movies stick with me and leave me emotional, I've never shed a tear over a movie. I guess i kind of realize the line between real and fake and don't let myself get too wrapped up in the emotional values of films. However I do know a lot of people (women specifically) that will cry over pretty much any movie.
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome that you cried watching FOLLOW THAT BIRD. I personally have a real soft spot for Sesame Street, and totally empathize with you on this one.
ReplyDeleteI used to laugh so hard I cried recounting Ernie & Bert skits back in the day--they never seem to get old. Although I have been accused of being far too easily amused.
